John Napier was a Scottish mathematician and landowner who lived from 1550 to 1617 and is best known as the discoverer of logarithms, a computational tool that transformed calculation in astronomy, navigation and physics. He also invented Napier bones, a manual calculating device for multiplication and division, and helped popularize the use of the decimal point in arithmetic notation. Napier served as the eighth Laird of Merchiston in Edinburgh and was known in his lifetime by the nickname Marvellous Merchiston.
