William Walden Rubey was an American geologist who lived from 1898 to 1974 and made contributions across multiple areas of Earth science, including the hydrology of streams, the geology of western Wyoming, seismic energy, mountain building through overthrust faulting, the growth of continents, the origins of Earth atmosphere and oceans, and the evolution of terrestrial planets. He served as president of the Geological Society of America in 1950 and directed the Lunar and Planetary Institute from 1968 to 1971, where he examined lunar samples returned by the Apollo program. He received the National Medal of Science in 1965, and a lunar feature, Dorsa Rubey, is named in his honor. He received the Penrose Medal in 1963.
