Jayanta Bandyopadhyay

Jayanta Bandyopadhyay (born 1947) is an Indian researcher whose work applies engineering and environmental science to the study of mountain ecosystems and water governance in South Asia. He earned a PhD in engineering physics from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur in 1976 and held a postdoctoral fellowship at MIT before becoming a professor at the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, where he founded the Centre for Development and Environment Policy in 1997. He was invited by the Earth Summit Secretariat to draft the chapter on mountain ecosystems for Agenda 21 in 1991, served as a coordinating lead author on freshwater ecosystem services for the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, and has authored sixteen books and more than 150 papers on environmental and water issues.
