George C. Pimentel (1922-1989) was an American physical chemist at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1949 until his death, working in spectroscopy and laser chemistry. He invented the chemical laser and developed matrix isolation techniques for studying reactive molecules trapped in a low-temperature solid, along with time-resolved infrared spectroscopy for observing transient species. He was also a leader in chemistry education through the CHEM STUDY project for American high schools, served as president of the American Chemical Society in 1987, and received the National Medal of Science in 1985.
