Allen J. Bard

Allen Joseph Bard (December 18, 1933 to February 11, 2024) was an American chemist who held the Hackerman-Welch Regents Chair at the University of Texas at Austin and directed its Center for Electrochemistry. He developed the scanning electrochemical microscope, co-discovered electrochemiluminescence, and made key advances in the photoelectrochemistry of semiconductor electrodes. He also co-authored a foundational textbook on electrochemistry that trained generations of researchers in the field. His work connected electrochemistry to materials science and helped establish techniques still used to probe surfaces and interfaces at small scales.
