Venkatraman Ramakrishnan is a British American structural biologist awarded a share of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, with Thomas A. Steitz and Ada Yonath, for using macromolecular crystallography to determine the atomic structure of ribosomes and explain how they carry out protein synthesis.
