Francis Galton (1822-1911) was an English polymath who worked across statistics, meteorology, and the study of human heredity and intelligence. He established the statistical concepts of correlation and regression toward the mean, founded the fields of psychometrics and differential psychology, and developed methods for classifying fingerprints that became useful in forensic science. He was also the first to apply statistical methods to the study of human differences and the inheritance of intelligence, and he is remembered as the originator of eugenics as a program of study.
