Andrew Garrett

Andrew Garrett is an American linguist born in 1961 and professor of linguistics at the University of California, Berkeley, who earned his PhD from Harvard University in 1990 with a dissertation on the syntax of Anatolian pronominal clitics. His research addresses Indo-European historical linguistics and the indigenous languages of California, particularly Yurok, and he worked with Leanne Hinton to digitize records from the Survey of California and Other Indian Languages, now held in the California Language Archive; he co-authored a 2015 paper supporting the steppe hypothesis for the geographic origin of the Indo-European language family through phylogenetic analysis, and in 2023 published The Unnaming of Kroeber Hall, examining the legacy of early California anthropology. He received the University of California, Berkeley Distinguished Teaching Award in 2007.
