Artur Avila Cordeiro de Melo is a Brazilian and naturalized French mathematician working primarily in dynamical systems and spectral theory. He has been a researcher at both IMPA in Brazil and the CNRS in France, splitting his time between the two, and has been a professor at the University of Zurich since 2018. In 2014 he became the first Latin American and the first Portuguese-speaking mathematician to win the Fields Medal.
