Charles Hard Townes was an American physicist. He worked on the theory and application of the maser, the microwave predecessor of the laser, contributing to the fundamental work in quantum electronics that made possible oscillators and amplifiers based on the maser and laser principle. He shared the 1964 Nobel Prize in Physics with Nikolay Basov and Alexander Prokhorov for this work. Townes later directed astrophysical research at the University of California, Berkeley.
