Robert Woodrow Wilson, born in 1936, is an American astronomer. He shared the 1978 Nobel Prize in Physics with Arno Penzias for their discovery of the cosmic microwave background radiation, made while the two were experimenting with the Holmdel Horn Antenna at Bell Labs in New Jersey, a discovery that provided key evidence for the Big Bang theory. In 1970 he also led the team that made the first detection of a rotational spectral line of carbon monoxide in space, work that helped found millimeter and submillimeter astronomy.
