Charles-Edouard Guillaume was a Swiss physicist who served as director of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures. He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1920 for the service he rendered to precision measurement in physics through his discovery of anomalies in nickel steel alloys, most notably the alloys invar and elinvar, whose unusual thermal properties made them valuable for precision instruments and chronometers.
