Louis Eugène Félix Néel (1904-2000) was a French physicist born in Lyon. He won the 1970 Nobel Prize in Physics for his pioneering theoretical work on the magnetic properties of solids, including his studies of antiferromagnetism and ferrimagnetism. His research had practical applications in the development of computer memory and in understanding the magnetic history recorded in rocks.
