Wolfgang Paul

Wolfgang Paul (1913-1993) was a German physicist. He developed the non-magnetic quadrupole mass filter and, in the 1950s, techniques for trapping charged particles using electric quadrupole fields, work that remains widely used in mass spectrometry. He shared half of the 1989 Nobel Prize in Physics with Hans Georg Dehmelt for this work, with the other half awarded to Norman Foster Ramsey Jr.
