American physicist (1926 to 2013) who invented the bubble chamber in 1952 while at the University of Michigan, using a superheated liquid to trace the paths of subatomic particles as strings of bubbles; he won the 1960 Nobel Prize in Physics for the invention at the age of 34, then moved into molecular biology and cofounded the biotechnology company Cetus in 1971.
