Erwin Hahn

Erwin Hahn was an American physicist who lived from 1921 to 2016, known for discovering the spin echo phenomenon in nuclear magnetic resonance in 1950 and for developing the cross-polarization technique in 1961 with his doctoral student Sven R. Hartmann. He served as professor of physics at the University of California, Berkeley from 1955 to 1991, becoming professor emeritus afterward, and also worked at Stanford University. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1971 and a Foreign Member of the Royal Society in 2000, and received the Oliver E. Buckley Condensed Matter Prize in 1971. He received the Wolf Prize in Physics in 1984.
