Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit was a German-born physicist and instrument maker working in the Dutch Republic who in 1714 produced the first thermometer using mercury as its working liquid, sealed in a glass tube with a reproducible fixed-point scale. His design, more accurate and stable than the open thermoscopes that came before it, is the version historians usually credit as the first practical, reliable thermometer, and the temperature scale he devised still carries his name.

Why this is disputed. The sealed mercury in glass thermometer with a standardized scale is credited to Fahrenheit in 1714; earlier open air thermoscopes without a standard scale existed from the early 1600s.
