Michael E. Fisher

Michael E. Fisher was an English physicist who lived from 1931 to 2021, celebrated for seminal work unifying the study of phase transitions and critical phenomena across physics and chemistry, and for developing the FKT algorithm. He held the Horace White Professorship in chemistry, physics and mathematics at Cornell University from 1966, chairing its chemistry department from 1975 to 1978, before joining the University of Maryland own Institute for Physical Science and Technology as a Regents Professor until his retirement in 2012. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1971 and a foreign associate of the United States National Academy of Sciences in 1983, and received the Boltzmann Medal in 1983. He received the Wolf Prize in Physics in 1980, shared with Kenneth G. Wilson and Leo Kadanoff.
