Calvin Quate

Calvin Forrest Quate was an American engineer and physicist who lived from December 7, 1923 to July 6, 2019, a Stanford University faculty member from 1961 until his retirement in 2004. He co-developed the atomic force microscope, described as the foundation of a nanotechnology industry worth roughly 100 million dollars. He shared the 2016 Kavli Prize in Nanoscience with Gerd Binnig and Christoph Gerber, and he also received the 1988 IEEE Medal of Honor and the 1992 National Medal of Science; he was a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Sciences and a fellow of the Royal Society.
