Hannes Olof Gösta Alfvén (1908-1995) was a Swedish electrical engineer and plasma physicist. He won the 1970 Nobel Prize in Physics for his fundamental work in magnetohydrodynamics, the study of how electrically conducting fluids such as plasmas behave in magnetic fields, including the class of waves now called Alfvén waves. His theories extended to the aurora, the Van Allen radiation belts, the behavior of Earth's magnetic field during magnetic storms, and the dynamics of plasma in the Milky Way.
