Knut W. Urban is a German physicist specializing in electron microscopy, born in 1941, recognized for developing aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy and for research on structural defects in oxides and complex metallic alloys. He directed the Institute of Microstructure Research at Forschungszentrum Julich from 1987 to 2010 and served as a professor of experimental physics at RWTH Aachen University. He received the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in 2014 and the Kavli Prize in Nanoscience in 2020, shared with Harald Rose, Maximilian Haider and Ondrej Krivanek. He received the Wolf Prize in Physics in 2011, shared with Rose and Haider.
