Robert Kraichnan was an American theoretical physicist known for foundational contributions to the statistical theory of fluid turbulence. He developed the direct-interaction approximation for turbulent flows and predicted the distinctive behavior of two-dimensional turbulence, in which energy cascades toward larger rather than smaller scales.
