Alfred Kastler was a French physicist, born in the German Empire in a region that became part of France after the First World War. He developed optical pumping, a technique combining optical and magnetic resonance methods to study the properties of atoms. He received the 1966 Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery and development of optical methods for studying Hertzian resonances in atoms.
