Ilya Mikhailovich Frank was a Soviet physicist. Together with Igor Tamm, he worked out the theoretical explanation of the Cherenkov effect, the emission of light by a charged particle traveling through a transparent medium faster than light travels in that medium, which had been observed experimentally by Pavel Cherenkov. He shared the 1958 Nobel Prize in Physics with Cherenkov and Tamm for the discovery and interpretation of this effect.
