Leo Esaki, born in 1925, is a Japanese physicist. He shared the 1973 Nobel Prize in Physics with Ivar Giaever and Brian Josephson for his work on electron tunneling in semiconductors, discovered while he was employed at Sony, which led him to invent the tunnel diode. He later became a pioneer of semiconductor superlattices and quantum wells.
