Heisuke Hironaka (1931 to 2026) was a Japanese mathematician awarded the Fields Medal in 1970 for his contributions to algebraic geometry. His best known result, proved in 1964, showed that singularities of algebraic varieties admit resolutions in characteristic zero, solving a major open problem in the field.
