Sophus Lie

Marius Sophus Lie was a Norwegian mathematician who lived from 1842 to 1899 and largely created the theory of continuous symmetry, applying it to geometry and differential equations. His central discovery was that continuous transformation groups, now called Lie groups, could be studied through their infinitesimal generators, which follow the algebraic structure now called a Lie algebra. This approach became foundational to modern mathematics and later influenced the development of quantum mechanics, and Lie also advised numerous students who became prominent mathematicians in their own right.
