James A. Jackson

James Anthony Jackson is a British geophysicist born December 12, 1954, in India, who is emeritus professor of active tectonics at the University of Cambridge and formerly headed its department of earth sciences and Bullard Laboratories. He pioneered the use of earthquake source seismology to examine how continents deform, combining remote sensing, GPS measurement, radar interferometry, and field observation to quantify continental deformation from individual faults to whole mountain belts. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2002, received the Bigsby Medal in 1997 and the Wollaston Medal in 2015, was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2015, and delivered the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures in 1995.
