James Gilluly was an American geologist born June 24, 1896, in Seattle, Washington, who died December 29, 1980, in Denver, Colorado, and who contributed to understanding the genesis of porphyry copper deposits and the evolution of plate tectonics, integrating detailed observations of the Ajo porphyry with experimental data on magmatic fluid processes and mineral formation, and publishing Oceanic Sediment Volumes and Continental Drift in 1969 and Plate Tectonics and Magmatic Evolution in 1971. He worked for the United States Geological Survey from 1922 to 1966, taught at the University of California, Los Angeles from 1938 to 1950, and served with the Military Geology Unit assigned to the South West Pacific Command during the Second World War. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1947, served as president of the Geological Society of America in 1948, won a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1960 and the Walter H. Bucher Medal of the American Geophysical Union in 1969, and received the Penrose Medal in 1958.
