George McClelland Whitesides is an American chemist born August 3, 1939, a professor of chemistry at Harvard University. His research spans molecular self-assembly, soft lithography, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, organometallic chemistry, microfabrication, microfluidics and nanotechnology, and he was reported in 2011 to hold the highest Hirsch index of any living chemist. He shared the 2022 Kavli Prize in Nanoscience with Jacob Sagiv, Ralph Nuzzo and David Allara, and he also received the 1998 National Medal of Science, the 2003 Kyoto Prize, the 2007 Priestley Medal, the 2010 Othmer Gold Medal and the 2011 King Faisal International Prize.
