Abram Alikhanov (1904-1970) was a leading Soviet experimental physicist specializing in particle and nuclear physics. He made significant contributions to the Soviet atomic bomb project and founded the Institute for Theoretical and Experimental Physics in Moscow, which he directed from 1945 to 1968. His achievements included developing the first heavy-water nuclear reactors built in the Soviet Union and helping build the first cyclotron constructed outside Berkeley, completed in 1934.
