J. Robert Oppenheimer was an American theoretical physicist who directed the Manhattan Project's Los Alamos Laboratory from 1943, overseeing the design and development of the first nuclear weapons, and who also made lasting contributions to quantum mechanics, nuclear physics and astrophysics.
