Patrick Maynard Stuart Blackett was a British experimental physicist. Using the Wilson cloud chamber, he was the first to demonstrate that radioactivity could transmute one chemical element into another, and he made significant discoveries in nuclear physics and cosmic ray research. He received the 1948 Nobel Prize in Physics for his development of the Wilson cloud chamber method and his discoveries in the fields of nuclear physics and cosmic radiation. Blackett later served as president of the Royal Society from 1965 to 1970.
