Carlo Rubbia, born in 1934, is an Italian particle physicist and inventor. He shared the 1984 Nobel Prize in Physics with Simon van der Meer for work at CERN that led to the discovery of the W and Z bosons, the carrier particles of the weak nuclear force. He later proposed the energy amplifier concept and contributed to the ICARUS neutrino experiment.
