Simon van der Meer (1925-2011) was a Dutch particle accelerator physicist, born in The Hague, who studied technical physics at the Delft University of Technology. He joined CERN in 1956 and remained until his retirement in 1990. He shared the 1984 Nobel Prize in Physics with Carlo Rubbia for inventing the stochastic cooling technique for particle beams, which made it possible to accumulate intense antiproton beams for the collision experiments that discovered the W and Z bosons.
