Subrata Roy

Subrata Roy is an American inventor, educator and scientist who specializes in plasma-based technologies and fluid dynamics. A professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Florida, where he founded the Applied Physics Research Group, he earned a bachelor degree in mechanical engineering from Jadavpur University in Kolkata in 1984 and a doctorate in engineering science from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1994. He pioneered plasma-based flow control and self-sterilizing surface technology, invented the Wingless Electromagnetic Air Vehicle in 2006, and founded SurfPlasma Inc, a company built around his plasma-based decontamination research. His honors include induction into the Florida Inventors Hall of Fame and a 2016 NASA Space Act Award.
