Walther Bothe was a German experimental physicist. He developed the coincidence method, a technique for detecting simultaneous events in nuclear interactions, and used it to study the Compton effect, cosmic rays and the wave-particle duality of radiation. He was awarded the 1954 Nobel Prize in Physics for the coincidence method and the discoveries made with it, in the same year Max Born was recognized separately for his own work on the statistical interpretation of quantum mechanics.
