Rudolf Ludwig Mössbauer was a German physicist. During his doctoral research, completed in 1958, he discovered what became known as the Mössbauer effect, the recoilless emission and absorption of gamma rays by nuclei bound in a solid, which made possible extremely precise measurements of small energy shifts. He shared the 1961 Nobel Prize in Physics with Robert Hofstadter for this discovery. The Mössbauer effect later enabled the Pound-Rebka experiment, an early terrestrial test of Einstein's general theory of relativity.
