Caroline Herschel

Astronomy

Caroline Herschel worked alongside her brother William Herschel as his observing and recording assistant, and independently discovered eight comets between 1786 and 1797, including a periodic comet that today carries her name. In 1828 the Royal Astronomical Society awarded her its Gold Medal for a catalogue of star clusters and nebulae she compiled, an honor no other woman received from that society for another one hundred and sixty eight years.
