Felix Christian Klein was a German mathematician who lived from 1849 to 1925 and influenced the development of modern mathematics through work in group theory, complex analysis and non-Euclidean geometry. His 1872 Erlangen program classified geometries by their underlying symmetry groups and unified Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometry within a single framework. He also described the one-sided surface known as the Klein bottle, transformed the University of Göttingen into a leading center for mathematics, and became the first president of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction in 1908.
