Edward Ted Irving was a British Canadian geologist and geophysicist born May 27, 1927, in Colne, Lancashire, England, who died February 25, 2014, in Saanich, British Columbia, Canada, and who worked at the Geological Survey of Canada Pacific Geoscience Centre. His paleomagnetic studies provided the first physical evidence for the theory of continental drift, demonstrating that Scotland had shifted relative to the geomagnetic pole and that India had moved northward roughly 6,000 kilometers while rotating more than 30 degrees, validating Alfred Wegener continental drift hypothesis. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1973 and a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1979, received the Logan Medal in 1975, the Walter H. Bucher Medal in 1979, the J. Tuzo Wilson Medal in 1984, the Arthur L. Day Medal in 1997, was elected to the United States National Academy of Sciences in 1998, was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 2003, and received the Wollaston Medal in 2005.
