John Edward Marr was a British geologist born June 14, 1857, in Poulton-le-Sands, England, who died October 1, 1933, in Cambridge, England, and who researched the succession of Palaeozoic rocks, demonstrated through studies of Silurian fossils that younger fossils had dropped into older strata through faulting, examined the Stockdale Shales of the Lake District, and developed a theory of lag faulting to explain glacial topography. He served as University Lecturer in Geology at Cambridge from 1886 to 1918 and as Woodwardian Professor of Geology at Cambridge from 1917 to 1930, publishing The Geology of the Lake District in 1916, The Scientific Study of Scenery in 1900 and Deposition of the Sedimentary Rocks in 1929, and served as president of the Geological Society of London from 1904 to 1906. He won the Sedgwick Prize in 1882, the Lyell Medal in 1900, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1891, won the Royal Medal in 1930, was elected an honorary fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1930, and received the Wollaston Medal in 1914.
