Charles Richet

Medicine

Charles Robert Richet was a French physiologist and a pioneer of immunology, known for his work on anaphylaxis, the phenomenon in which an initial dose of a substance can cause the body to react violently, sometimes fatally, to a later dose rather than building resistance to it. He won the 1913 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in recognition of his work on anaphylaxis. Beyond his physiological research, Richet devoted considerable time to studying paranormal and spiritualist phenomena, coining the term ectoplasm, and he held views on race and eugenics that are now regarded as deeply problematic.
