Home›Scientists›Institution›National Academy of SciencesInstitutionNational Academy of SciencesLearned Societies and AssociationsDocumented History and SocietyDevelopingThe National Academy of Sciences is a private, nonprofit institution that advises the United States government on scientific and technical matters. It was chartered by an Act of Congress signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863, during the Civil War, at the request of a group of scientists who wanted a body able to certify scientific findings for federal use; membership is by election and is widely treated as one of the highest honours in American science. It has no single founder in the way a laboratory has one; the Act created it and named the fifty incorporating members in the same document.
