Warren B. Hamilton

Earth Sciences

Warren B. Hamilton was an American geologist who lived from 1925 to 2018 and specialized in integrating geological and geophysical data into large scale theories of crustal and mantle evolution of the Earth, spending his primary career as a research scientist with the United States Geological Survey from 1952 to 1995 before becoming a distinguished senior scientist at the Colorado School of Mines. During the International Geophysical Year of 1958 to 1959 he led fieldwork in Antarctica, was the first to formally name the Transantarctic Mountains, and recognized geological connections linking Antarctica, Australia and Africa that supported continental drift theory. He pioneered applying plate tectonic concepts to land based geology in western North America, recognizing that ocean floors and island arcs had been incorporated into continental orogenic complexes and demonstrating that the Basin and Range region had doubled in width through crustal extension, and his State Department funded analysis of Indonesia produced influential maps and publications on converging tectonic plates. In later work he developed unconventional theories challenging mainstream models of mantle convection and plate tectonics. He received the Penrose Medal in 1989.
