Baruj Benacerraf

Medicine

Baruj Benacerraf (1920-2011) was a Venezuelan-American immunologist whose research advanced the understanding of the immune system. He shared the 1980 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, with Jean Dausset and George Davis Snell, for discovering the major histocompatibility complex genes that encode cell surface molecules the immune system uses to distinguish self from non-self. His work on immune response genes established the genetic basis for understanding transplant rejection and autoimmune disease.
