Genomics

Life Sciences

Genomics is an interdisciplinary field of molecular biology focused on the structure, function, evolution, mapping and editing of genomes.

Facts
Founded Year
1986 1
Year the term "genomics" was coined, per the Genomics (Wikipedia) History section; the field's own founding technique (Sanger sequencing) predates this by roughly a decade, already captured separately as the founded-by fact.
Central Question
How does the complete sequence and organization of an organism's genome, rather than any single gene, give rise to its full range of traits and disease susceptibilities? 1
Scope
Genomics is the branch of molecular biology concerned with the structure, function, evolution, mapping and editing of genomes, the complete set of DNA within an organism, rather than single genes studied in isolation. 1
Significance
Frederick Sanger's dideoxy chain-termination sequencing method, developed in the 1970s and used to sequence the first complete DNA genome, that of the bacteriophage phiX174, in 1977, provided the core technique that the field of genomics, a term coined the following decade, was built on. 1
Connections

Founded By

Frederick Sanger, Scientists

Sanger's sequencing method made the field possible; the term genomics itself is credited to geneticist Thomas Roderick in 1986, whose own entity is not yet live on this atlas.

Uses

DNA Sequencer, Instruments

The DNA sequencer reads nucleotide order and is the foundational instrument of genomics, from Sanger sequencing through modern high-throughput platforms.
