Theunis Piersma is a Dutch ornithologist, ecologist, and educator born in 1958. He is among the most influential researchers of wader birds worldwide, studying how flock size, distribution, climate, food, predators, pathogens, and historical genetic background relate to one another; a Dutch broadcaster called him the world's first migratory bird professor in 2012.
