Glaciology is the study of glaciers and other forms of ice, including ice sheets, sea ice and permafrost, and of the physical processes that govern their formation, flow and melting. Glaciologists measure ice thickness, flow velocity and mass balance to understand how glaciers respond to climate, and ice cores drilled from polar ice sheets and mountain glaciers preserve trapped air bubbles and chemical signatures that provide some of the most detailed records of past climate available to science, extending back hundreds of thousands of years in the longest Antarctic cores. The discipline has become central to monitoring modern climate change, since glacier and ice sheet loss is both a sensitive indicator of warming and a major contributor to sea level rise.

Central QuestionHow glaciers and other ice bodies form, move and change, on Earth and on other worlds that carry ice. 1 ScopeGlaciology is the scientific study of glaciers and, more generally, ice and the natural phenomena that involve it, integrating geophysics, geology, physical geography, geomorphology, climatology, meteorology, hydrology, biology and ecology. 1 SignificanceThe discovery of water ice on the Moon, Mars, Europa and Pluto has extended glaciology into an extraterrestrial field known as astroglaciology. 1 Connections

Glaciology is an interdisciplinary Earth science that integrates geophysics, geology, physical geography, geomorphology, climatology, meteorology, hydrology, biology, and ecology.
Lead section, scope sentence
the scientific study of glaciers, or, more generally, ice and natural phenomena that involve ice.
Lead section, closing sentence
The discoveries of water ice on the Moon, Mars, Europa and Pluto add an extraterrestrial component to the field, which is referred to as "astroglaciology".
