Kazan Federal University is a public research university in Kazan, Russia. It was founded in 1804 as Imperial Kazan University, which makes it the second oldest continuously existing institution of tertiary education in Russia. The mathematician Nikolai Ivanovich Lobachevsky, founder of non-Euclidean geometry, served there as rector from 1827 until 1846. The university is known as the birthplace of organic chemistry through the work of Aleksandr Butlerov, Vladimir Markovnikov and Aleksandr Arbuzov, and as the place where Evgeny Zavoisky discovered electron spin resonance. It received federal status in 2011.
